The world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer is trying to increase its presence in the mining industry. Caterpillar Inc. is now one step closer to acquiring Bucyrus International Inc., a Wisconsin-based mining equipment manufacturer, for a company record $8.6 billion.
On Tuesday, the US Department of Justice closed its antitrust investigation that had been holding up the deal. Caterpillar had to sell roughly $4.5 billion worth of bonds to help fund this purchase. The deal is expected to be finalized in the next few months.
"We were very pleased to hear this positive news from the Department of Justice about this strategic acquisition," said Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman in a statement.

Navy Ship Named After Cesar Chavez in San Diego

Navy Ship under construction in San Diego to be named after Cesar Chavez
Navy Ship named USS Cesar Chav..

The Navy has caused a small uproar over its decision to name a cargo ship currently under construction in San Diego, California, after union activist Cesar Chavez. Chavez was a Navy veteran and a noted civil rights leader.
General Dynamics Nassco, the shipbuilding firm in charge of construction, suggested the name in honor of its Latino workforce. Nearly a third of the population of San Diego is of Hispanic descent.
The ship is being built in the prominently Latino neighborhood of San Diego called Barrio Logan.
Republican congressman Duncan Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, slammed the decision as being biased and unfair to military war heroes.
"Naming a ship after César Chávez goes right along with other recent decisions by the Navy that appear to be more about making a political statement than upholding the Navy's history and tradition," said Hunter during a press conference.
Just last week Hunter took issue with the Navy over its decision to allow chaplains to perform same sex unions in states where gay marriage is legal. The Navy reversed that decision after being pressured by Hunter and other lawmakers.
It is yet to be seen if the same result happens this... Read the rest of the article at:

White Digital Media: Tornadoes rip through Tuscaloosa and Huntsville in Alabama

Death toll in the hundreds as massive tornadoes strike Northern Alabama on Wednesday

Dozens of storms and tornadoes struck the southern US on Wednesday
Dozens of storms and tornadoes struck the southern US on Wednesday
Devastation struck the South yesterday as severe storms and tornadoes ripped across five US states. As of Thursday morning the reported death toll had reached 190. The state of Alabama was hit the hardest, with 128 confirmed deaths.
The two areas in Alabama that took the most direct hit from the tornadoes were Huntsville and Tuscaloosa.
Tuscaloosa, the former capital of Alabama, has over 83,000 residents and is the home of the University of Alabama. Mayor Walter Maddox said the city’s police and emergency services have been completely overwhelmed and state and federal assistance is going to be needed.
“This is a journey that we cannot complete alone,” Maddox said in an interview on CNN. “And so, we’re going to need the help of state and federal resources to help Tuscaloosa return to normalcy sometime in the near future.”
Mayor Maddox says the first priority in Tuscaloosa is restoring communication so that the city’s emergency response can be coordinated and an accurate assessment of the damage can be made. He said the tornadoes had completely incapacitated the city’s infrastructure and limited the local government’s ability to respond.
“This storm not only has cut a path of destruction through our city, it’s also inhibited a lot of city services; our police station, our EMA, several police precincts, our environmental services department were all hit,” said Maddox.
At least six separate tornadoes are believed to ...Read the rest of the article at:

Dish Network plans to close hundreds of Blockbuster Video stores

Satellite TV provider Dish Network has acquired Blockbuster Video’s assets in an auction

Dish Network plans to close hundreds of Blockbuster Video stores
Dish Network has acquired Blockbuster's stores in an auction
Hundreds of Blockbuster Video stores will be shutting their doors soon. The video rental company is in the process of being taken over by the Dish Network and major changes are coming.
The Dish Network, the second largest provider of satellite TV in the US, purchased the rights to Blockbuster Video and all of its properties for about $320 million in an auction. Last month, Blockbuster was given permission by a bankruptcy court to sell off its remaining assets in an attempt to reduce the $1 billion debt the company had built up.
The Dish Network filed documents with bankruptcy court over the weekend listing which Blockbuster stores it intends to keep open. The deal is expected to be finalized sometime in the next few weeks, giving the satellite TV provider control over the leases of almost 2,000  properties currently run by the Dallas-based Blockbuster Video.
Blockbuster currently owns 1,751 stores in the US, but Dish Network only plans to keep about 600 of them open. That leaves over a 1,000 former Blockbuster properties that won’t have their leases renewed.
So far, Dish Network hasn't indicated that it will extend the leases of the multi-floor corporate headquarters in downtown Dallas or the 850,000 square-foot distribution center in McKinney, Texas .
At its peak Blockbuster operated about 4,000 stores in the US.
However, it appears that Dish Network only acquired the company to take advantage of its online video services and will only maintain a fraction of the physical video sites. The satellite TV provider hopes to release a digital streaming service that...Read the rest of the article at:
